This module will introduce the basic concepts and skills of evidence-based medicine (EBM), and related issues in evidence-based Korean Medicine practice. It aims to provide students with an understanding of the background to the evidence-based approach and will cover the basic skills necessary to apply the evidence-based approach in health care practice. This course is planed to help undergraduate students to understand the basics of research methodology in clinical medicine. Topics covered in this lecture include history of clinical research, types and characteristics of clinical research, introduction of medical and Korean Medicine journals, use of medical databases such as Pubmed etc., concept of SCI and impact factor, how to find research articles and journals. This course deals with the production and consumption of modern medical research in a broad and easy way, including basic medical statistics covered in clinical research. This course teaches the process of new drug development, characteristics of each step and related knowledge. Learning the examples of innovative new drugs will allow to understand the most recent trend of drug development. This course will cover the whole process of new drug development including steps of categorization, design and screening of drugs, discovery and optimization of lead compounds, pre-clinical and clinical studies, prospects and trends of new drug development, strategy for patenting and marketing new drugs. In addition, the difference and unique characteristics of herbal new drug development which differentiate it from conventional drug development process will be teached as well.

This course will teach in-depth knowledge on toxicology such as toxicokinetics, adverse outcome pathways, cellular and organ toxicology, environmental toxicology, addiction, etc., to improve the understanding on pharmacotoxicology. In particular, the basis of toxicology will be teached, as well as herbal toxicology with experimental and clinical evidence, herbal toxicology on target organs, and toxicology derived from herb-drug interaction. This course will be a basic introduction for safe herbal prescriptions in clinical practice.
